Asking that difficult question of a family you may have just met…”do you have a gun in your home?” May be made easier by the Play Date Exchange?

May 22nd, 2009

A couple of years, while picking up my seven  year old son from school, I was met by him and a new friend from his class.
They had been planning a play date during recess and had decided that they wanted to have the play date at our house. I had never met this child before nor knew his family. I asked the young boy where his mother was and he pointed to a waiting SUV.  I took both boys over to the SUV met the little boys mother, exchanged telephone numbers and away we went. The boys asked if I could take them to a driving range to hit some golf balls.  I complied and away we went.  We had been at the driving range for about twenty minutes when all hell broke loose.  My son and his friend were hitting balls out into the range, having fun when one of the boys broke a cardinal rule of driving ranges, he stepped into the the lane where my son was hitting and received a golf ball to the nose moving at a high rate of speed.  The little boy’s nose started bleeding profusely and was in shock.  People came running from everywhere, 911 was called by the staff and the paramedics were dispatched.  I immediately called the number that I was given by the little boys mother, which went to voicemail.  I left a frantic message explaining what had happened and to please call back as soon as she got the message.  Within minutes the paramedics arrived and were attending to the boy.  They conferred with me as to the little boys medical information which I had zero knowlege of.  I explained that we had just met and that he was on a play date with my son.  The paramedics indicated that a hospital visit was mandatory once an ambulance is dispatched.  We were ushered into the ambulance and sped off to the hospital.  Upon arriving at the hospital I again was asked by medical staff of the boy’s medical history.  I again explained the situation and continued to leave messages on the boy’s mothers cell phone.  We were in the hopital for about an hour before I received a return call from a very concerned parent.  They rushed to the hopital to find their son, fortunately, to be no worse for wear other than a sore nose and a couple of blackening eyes. I think most people will find, like me, that the benefits offered by this website would have been very helpful in this situation.
